The Heart of Service: The Joy of Lionism in Arizona
For over a century, Lions Clubs in Arizona have stood as a beacon of service, fellowship, and community transformation. The joy of being a Lion is found in the simple but powerful belief that by working together, we can accomplish far more for our communities than would be possible alone. This shared purpose turns service into a lifelong commitment, fueled by the camaraderie of fellow Lions in more than 200 countries. Here in Arizona, we join in our great projects: Camp Tatiyee, Melvin Jones International Memorial, Lions Foundation of Arizona, and Arizona Lions Vision and Hearing Foundation. We anticipate being able to vote at this year’s convention to expand Arizona Lions Youth Exchange as a statewide project.
The Tangible Joy of Service
The true joy of Lionism is realized through the hard work performed in our communities. Lions are not just people who write checks (though we do that, too); we are dedicated individuals on the ground, rolling up their sleeves to find and meet needs in an efficient and caring way. From vision screenings at the Mexican Consulate conducted by the Douglas and Safford Lions Clubs to the new Highland Prep Leos Club being sponsored by the West Valley Empowered Voices Lions Club, to our enduring crusade as “Knights of the Blind,” Arizona Lions are constantly turning their passion into action.
Connection and Community
While the work is serious, the experience is filled with fellowship. Friendships made in Lionism last a lifetime because they are built on a common foundation of service. This spirit of connection is vibrant today, evidenced by platforms like the Roar Room podcast and the Global Lions Forum Facebook group, where Lions from across the world gather to connect, share best practices, and remind one another that “Together, our voice is stronger”. Both of these were started by Arizona Lions!
Looking Ahead: Serve, Celebrate, and Grow
|
|
|
The future of Lionism in Arizona is marked by a renewed roadmap of strategic growth and visibility. This starts with the Arizona Lions Mid-Year Conference in November. It starts on Friday night with a banquet celebrating Camp Tatiyee, open to Lions and non-Lions alike. We are again welcoming Lions International Directors to Arizona. We are pleased to have ID Daniel Marney Elkins as our keynote speaker on Saturday.
|
|
|
|
January will see ID Mark Mansell traveling to Fort Thomas Arizona to highlight this year’s Melvin Jones International Memorial Re-Dedication to Lionism.
|
|
|
|
Initiatives such as the upcoming “Arizona Lions Service Week 2027 in February provide service throughout the state, while highlighting the vitality of our organization. This statewide campaign aims to increase public visibility.
A Legacy of Caring
Ultimately, the joy of Lionism in Arizona is the quiet satisfaction of knowing that you have made a tangible difference in the life of another. It is a culture of kindness, respect, and belonging. As we look toward the future, we remain guided by the timeless principle set by our founder, Melvin Jones:
“You can’t get very far until you start doing something for somebody else” Because where there is a need, there is a Lion.

Accountability, Expectations, and the Power of Service
|
|
| What does it mean to be a Lion? According to Lions International, Lions are compassionate, service-minded volunteers who lead by helping their communities and people in need. If compassion guides the way we serve our communities, it must also guide the way we support one another. Each year, we are given goals that challenge us to grow, lead, and deliver results. Meeting those goals takes accountability, determination, and a District team committed to working together. We already have powerful momentum: I have attended several multi-club inductions in Phoenix where more than 20 to 30 members were inducted. |
|
|
|
We are adding a branch club in Scottsdale, launching a new club in Peoria before the end of the quarter, and chartering a new Leo Club in Avondale with more than 35 members. These achievements should energize us and inspire every Lion to ask, “How can I help?” Our roots—and our reason for being—are grounded in service. That mission must remain our primary focus. The time and energy we invest should strengthen our clubs, add more helping hands, and expand the service we provide. We will move forward with accountability, clear expectations, and a renewed commitment to one another.
This is a season for excitement, partnership, and progress. We will refocus, regroup, and make changes where necessary— not from any frustration but from confidence in what we can accomplish together. We will not be distracted from our mission. I will continue to lead with purpose because my heart and mind are rooted in service.
Our results so far show what focused service can achieve:
|
|
District 21N
- 62 Clubs
- 1520 Members total (up from 1511)
- 34 New Members
- 6 Reinstated
- 0 Transfers
- 31 Drops
- A plus of 9 members
|
|
|
|
We achieved these results even while facing distractions. Imagine what we can accomplish with positivity, unity, and the right mindset. New partnerships are already taking shape, and we are entering midyear with a clear plan of action. Our goal is to establish four new clubs; now we need only three more. Our goal is also to add 100 new members—and we can do it. A title is only a title; it does not define who I am. I am a Lion at heart, and service is at the center of everything I do. Let us return to the basics, strengthen our roots, support one another, and move forward together. The opportunity is in front of us. Let’s answer it with courage, compassion, and action.
Our founder Melvin Jones had a favorite aphorism he kept framed in his office: “Truth and roses have thorns about them.”

Moving Forward Together – Service, Growth and Leadership
Fellow Lions of District 21-S,
As we move further into the 2026–2027 Lions year, I want to begin by saying Thank You. Across District 21-S, Lions continue to demonstrate what our organization is all about: serving our communities, helping those in need, building friendships, and making a difference.
We have had a busy start to our year. We held our District 21-S Kickoff, completed Zone Chair training, continued leadership development, conducted service projects, welcomed new Lions, and began working toward opportunities for new clubs. I have also had the privilege of visiting clubs and talking with Lions throughout our district.
Now it is time to take the next step.
Our theme remains:
Serve Our Communities. Grow Our Membership. Develop Our Leaders. Strengthen Our Culture.
Service Must Remain at the Center
Every Lions club exists because there is a community that needs us. I am asking every club in District 21-S to continue looking for meaningful ways to serve each month.
Whether it is vision, hunger, diabetes, youth, veterans, the environment, disaster relief, or another local need, find something that matters to your community and get your Lions involved.
And please remember to report your service in the Lions Portal. If we do the work but do not report it, the true impact of Lions is never fully recognized.
Membership Is Everyone’s Responsibility
One of our biggest priorities continues to be membership.
Growing Lions is not simply the responsibility of the District Governor, Global Membership Team, Global Extension Team, Zone Chairs, or Club Presidents. Membership belongs to every Lion.
Ask yourself one simple question:
- Who have I invited to become a Lion?
Our goal is not simply to add names to a roster. We want people who want to serve. Once we bring new members into Lions, we must give them a reason to stay. Welcome them, mentor them, listen to their ideas, and give them meaningful responsibilities.
Retention is just as important as recruitment.
We are also continuing our work to establish new clubs in communities where Lions can make an impact. Growing District 21-S means strengthening existing clubs while also taking Lionism into communities where we currently do not have a strong presence.
Support Your Zone Meetings
Our Zone Chairs are an important connection between our clubs and the District. I encourage Club Presidents, Vice Presidents, Secretaries, Treasurers, and other emerging leaders to participate in Zone meetings.
These meetings should not simply be about reports. They should be opportunities to exchange ideas, discuss challenges, share successful service projects, learn from one another, and build stronger relationships between clubs.
- If your club is struggling, please ask for help. The District is here to assist you.
Our philosophy remains: “Your Club, Your Way.”
The District is here to help and guide our clubs, not tell them what to do.
Develop Tomorrow’s Leaders Today
Every club should be asking: Who are our next leaders?
Leadership development cannot begin the month before elections. We need to identify Lions with potential now and give them opportunities to lead committees, organize service projects, attend training, participate in Zone meetings, and learn about District leadership.
I continue to ask every club to identify at least two emerging leaders who can be developed and encouraged.
Our future depends on preparing people today.
What Lies Ahead
The coming months will give us many opportunities to serve, grow, learn, and celebrate Lionism. We will continue our District leadership meetings, Zone activities, Roar Room conversations, club visits, membership efforts, training opportunities, and service projects throughout District 21-S.
We also have important Lions events ahead, including our Multiple District Conference, November 6 & 7, with guest speaker International Director, Daniel Elkins and, in January, a very special opportunity to celebrate the legacy of our founder, Melvin Jones, who was born right here in District 21-S in Fort Thomas, Arizona. This is scheduled for January 9th.
That connection to Lions history should remind us of something important. Melvin Jones had an idea more than a century ago, that successful people could use their talents to improve their communities.
Today, we are carrying that idea forward.
Finish What We Started
At the beginning of this Lions year, we established ambitious goals. Those goals will only become accomplishments through the work of our clubs and members.
I am asking every club to look at where you are today.
- Are you serving every month?
- Are you reporting your service?
- Are you inviting new members?
- Are you keeping the members you already have?
- Are you developing new leaders?
Are your members being treated with respect and given opportunities to participate?
And most importantly:
Are we having fun while we serve?
Lionism should bring purpose, friendship, fellowship, and enjoyment into our lives. People stay where they feel welcomed, appreciated, respected, and needed.
I am proud of what District 21-S has accomplished so far, but our work is far from finished. There are communities that still need Lions. There are people waiting to be invited. There are future leaders waiting for someone to give them an opportunity.
Together, we can make 2026–2027 a year of service, growth, leadership, and stronger clubs.
Thank you for everything you do for your clubs, your communities, and Lions Clubs International.
We Serve!
In Lionism,
Edmund Lopez District Governor, District 21-S 2026–2027

Creation of AI Flyers – Friend or Foe
|
|
|
While eye catching flyers can be highly effective – too many pictures, small print that has all ages looking for a magnifying glass or so much information that you have to search for the date, time location are all traps anyone can fall into!
Simplicity is key!
|
|
|

|
|
Above is a GREAT example of what NOT to do!
“It is a good idea not to put so much information on an AI generated flyer that it cannon be read. Use a QR code to link to all the information and registration information on your website or Facebook Event” shared by Lion Richard Stevenson.
Additional Reminders:
- Remember to ensure correct branding with our Lion Logo, Project Logos, etc
- Beware of letting AI redo a photo of a real person – We want to use true representations of people (e.g. Melvin Jones, Lions & Leadership, etc)
- Use QR Codes or Links for online registrations, tickets, etc
- Ensure the picture(s) chosen tell the story you desire. Want to show how much fun your club is having serve – then ensure the Lions are smiling!

Reporting Service in the Lions Portal

Importance of the Lions Code of Ethics
|
|
| Our Lions Code of Ethics is core to the effectiveness of our organization. It provides a guide for eithical behavior, both personally and from an organizational perspective. It establishes a framework for decision-making, ensuring that actions align with our Lions’ values and principles. A commitment to ethical standards helps to build trust with our members and Clubs, as well as with the Community! It sets the tone for our Lion’s culture, fostering an environment where ethical behavior is valued and encouraged, which can lead to improved member morale and retention. This applies to new and mature Lions. Ensure you keep this at the center of all your actions. |
