It’s less than two weeks away. We’ll be gathering to celebrate “America 250: Celebrating Service, Legacy & Leadership” at our Multiple District 21 state convention. Our honored guests will be Mark S. Lyon, international first vice president of our association and his wife Lyn. Wow!
If you haven’t registered, do so NOW before it’s too late. We need you to be a part of the celebration… the awards and recognitions presentations… the various workshops… the Town Hall with next year’s Lions International President… and so much more!

The Convention will include our recognition of Lions who have passed this past year, as well as voting for directors of state and district projects, and a controversial ballot measure to rebate dues from the MD to the districts. Please ask your club officers to share with you the ballot measure. It includes the pro and con arguments, and the repercussions on services currently provided by the Multiple District that would go away if these funds are rebated. The actual ballot and pros and cons is shared within this issue under the Election Information section
At the Convention, workshops for Lions will be presented, including one on actually creating a club website at no cost to clubs. Another workshop will be an interactive tour through the Lion Portal. Other workshops will address the changing club culture we share in almost all clubs, reactivating Lions Quest in our local schools, as well as identifying the next adventure in Lionism (you’ll have to attend to find out).
In June, let’s close out the year very strong as we share in this celebration of accomplishment. This year-end month is a turning point. “Lions of Arizona” enters a new era of growth, innovation, and expanded community impact – much like that being experienced globally with Lions International. Think about what’s ahead….

Under the leadership of Lion Mark, our next International President, there is a renewed focus on strengthening clubs, increasing membership, and empowering Lions to serve in ways that are both meaningful and sustainable for the future….
His vision challenges us to think beyond tradition, to embrace new ideas, reach new audiences, and build clubs that reflect the evolving needs of our communities….

Arizona is uniquely positioned to lead in this next chapter of Lionism. Multiple District 21 has long been a model of dedication and service, and today we can become a model for growth. With vibrant communities, diverse populations, and a strong foundation of committed Lions, we can expand our reach, welcome new members, develop emerging leaders, and launch innovative service projects that create lasting impact.
As we close out these past 12 months, let us learn from the past, embrace those (and thank them) for all their support and assistance, and take stock in who we are, what we do, and how we continue to serve those in need.
This Convention is where our brighter future begins to shine. As we reflect on 250 years of American history, we are reminded that progress has always been driven by those willing to move forward, to serve others, and to step up in leadership.
The future of Lions in Arizona is bright. It depends on all of us. Together, let us lead with purpose, grow with intent, and serve in ways that will shape the next 250 years.
And as a final postscript, allow me to thank DG Richard and DG Maryjane for their diligence and hard work on the council, as well as in their respective districts. Let me also acknowledge the trio of Sandi Sterker, Linda Finley, and Ellen Yopps who served this year as council secretary, treasurer and admin, respectively. Collectively, they helped me as your Council Chair in so many ways I cannot thank them enough!
Finally, my congratulations to next year’s MD officers: Keith Alexander, council chair; Marsine Perry, 21-North governor; Ed Lopez, 21-South governor; VDGs Jim Myers, Julie Sullivan, Dereck Davis and Patrick Hammons. You’ll be great!

Dear Lions Family,
As my term as District Governor comes to a close, I would like to extend my deepest gratitude and appreciation to each and every one of you for your unwavering dedication, service, and support throughout this incredible journey.
This year has been filled with meaningful service projects, fellowship, leadership, and compassion that truly demonstrated the spirit of Lionism. Together, we served our communities, supported those in need, empowered our Leos, and strengthened the bond of our Lions family. None of this would have been possible without your commitment, teamwork, and generous hearts.
Thank you to our club officers, district leaders, committee chairs, Leos, advisors, and every Lion who volunteered their time and talents. Your passion for service continues to inspire hope and make a lasting impact in the lives of many.
As we move forward into a new Lions year, I encourage all of you to continue serving with kindness, unity, and purpose. Let us continue to grow our membership, support our youth, and work together to make our district even stronger for future generations.
Remember, no act of service is ever too small when done with love and compassion.
It has truly been an honor and privilege to serve as your District Governor. I am forever grateful for the friendships, memories, and experiences we shared together.

Governor’s Report – District 21-S
|

|
You told us you wanted more members and more active members. The good news is that you have been very successful at recruiting new Lions. Now let’s focus on keeping them — along with the members we already have and even some of the Lions we may have lost along the way. After all, you must first have members in order for them to be active members.
It is easier to keep a Lion than to recruit a new one, and a Lion who stays connected may become active again, serve in a new way, help raise funds, or help recruit the next new member. Reach out to Lions you have not seen in a while. Call them. Text them. Invite them to a meeting, service project, officer installation, or even a simple social event to rebuild friendships. Sometimes people drift away because life got busy — and no one asked them back.
Also reach out to former Lions. Things change and some who left may now be ready to return if they know they are still wanted and valued. Not every Lion can work every service project, but every Lion still has value. Many can still serve as advisors, mentors, officers, board members, committee members, or experienced voices who help guide the club.
We all have good Lions who may have run into a little difficulty lately. Let’s help them remain Lions. There is almost always a way to keep someone connected if we care enough to try. And remember — there is still a little time left to sponsor and join a new Lion before the new $35 entrance fee begins. Every Lion matters. Every Lion counts.

The Lions Pride Podcast, hosted by Lion Gerald “Jerry” Hursh (MD21-D21S Zone 2 Chair) and Co-Host Lion Laurie Fivecoat, is connecting Lions across Arizona by highlighting service, leadership, and community impact.
Each episode features interviews with District leaders, club members, and community partners, offering ideas on service projects, membership growth, and club success. The podcast aims to inspire, inform, and give Lions a platform to share their stories.

Load Club Officers – PAST DUE – Act Now

| As noted last month, ALL Club Officers should now be loaded into the Portal. The DG’s and supporting staff have discussed this several times and have sent emails to all of the clubs and spoken to clubs directly. Without club officers loaded into the Portal, our DG team and the clubs themselves cannot operate effectively. Clubs must adjust their yearly plan to ensure elections of officers occur in April to early May to ensure our new Lion year can start off smoothly.
The Zone Chairs, and incoming Zone Chairs need to push the clubs to get this done now. You can check the Portal yourselves, so you all know who has not done this yet. If you are unclear how to use the Portal, check with Ellen Yopps or Bobbie Ravenkamp for more details, then you can assist the clubs. |

Leaders: Assertive vs Aggressive
|
|
| We are Lions and we thrive on serving and giving back to our communities. But are we effective Leaders within Committees, Boards, MD/District structures or even within our own Clubs? Rumblings of displeasure are heard throughout the State…..at all levels. We are a volunteer organization, which means we must work together through influence vs directives. We must all be dedicated to achieving our Club/District/State Project/MD/International goals……not our personal preferences or expectations. We must learn to trust, coach and mentor.
We have all observed Leadership behaviors that are less than positive. Excuses are made: “Well, they feel strongly or protective about the history” or “Well that is just their way speaking, perhaps they don’t realize how harsh or self-centered that comes across”. There are SOOOOO many other examples: Leaders who are Passive/Invisible or Bossy/Aggressive are less effective than those who are Assertive/Outcome oriented.
As Leaders – we must consciously embrace Active Listening and maintain a sharp eye on the our goals and the culture we enable. Our personal preferences are simply ideas – not mandates. Keep an open mind, show respect to others, engage and encourage communication to find the best way to Yes and positive outcomes that will equates to success to reaching and exceeding our Goals! |

| As discussed in previous issue, active listening is a strength of effective leaders. Coming into a meeting prepared is necessary; HOWEVER, Leaders who do not listen can not fully address issues, concerns nor recognize positive ideas/suggestions. Clear communication may make members feel unheard.
How many times have you witnessed someone with firmly held and immoveable preconceived ideas? In those situations, have you seen an issue beat into the ground without positive resolution? As a Leader, if you experience or observe an undercurrent of unrest, dissatisfaction or negativity – step back. Examine the dynamic. Stay curious and ask questions. Is there a way for you to change the tone of the conversation? Is a separate direct conversation required with key players? Options exist and Action required. Ignoring a concern of this nature can erode trust and confidence. Be that catalyst of positive, goal oriented outcomes vs any personal agendas.

Ever notice how we often speak a whole different language as Lions? DG, VDG, GMT, GLT, etc and MD-21, 21-N & 21-S ….. it can feel like alphabet soup, especially for our new members, and if we’re honest, even for some of us more seasoned Lions too!
That’s why going back to the basics matters. Understanding our abbreviations isn’t just about terminology, it’s about confidence, connection, and being able to fully engage in the incredible work we do together. I highly encourage you to share this graphic with your incoming members and even revisit it within your club. A quick refresher can go a long way in helping everyone feel more included and empowered. At the end of the day, knowledge is power, and when our Lions feel confident, we serve stronger. Let’s keep learning, growing, and leading together.

| The State of Arizona, within our Lions framework, is made of two (2) Districts referred to as 21-North and 21-South. Together, holistically, these District comprise the Multiple District 21 or MD-21. MD-21 is a part of the Congressional Area (CA) 1G which is apart of the Lions USA……and so on, up the food-chain to Lions International.

| Our Seeing Beyond the Border eyeglass processing, on Saturday, May 30 was a huge success.

– 3000 glasses processed

Phoenix Asian American Lions’ Mexico Mission

| This is our team from the Phoenix Asian American Lions Club for our Mexico humanitarian vison screening and backpack with school supplies the past 2 days. Lunch was also served today and we handed out sunglasses and reading glasses to those who wanted them. We screened 565 pairs of eyes yesterday, and today gave away 350 backpacks, and server over 600 people lunch. We are lions and this is what we do! |

| The Florence Lions Club is proud to support the Pinal County Historical Museum as it undergoes exciting renovations! Club members are stepping up to volunteer their time helping catalog, pack, and move artifacts to preserve the rich history of our community.
The project kicked off on Tuesday, May 19, and our club was proud to show up to help. We are grateful to be part of this important effort to protect and celebrate Pinal County’s history. |
