MD21 Leadership Messages
CC Ken Leja

From the high desert to our urban centers, Lions across the state have continued to demonstrate what it means to serve with compassion, dedication, and community spirit.

Welcome to May. In little more than nine weeks, we transition into a new Lions year. We do so with pride in what we’ve accomplished and optimism for what lies ahead.

Celebrate at State Convention

Before our end-of-year, however, we should begin celebrating what we’ve accomplished. For Lion Karen and me, we’re looking forward to seeing you at the MD21 State Convention June 12-14. With your registration (click here), you’ll be able to meet Mark Lyon, first international vice president, and his wife Lion Lyn as they join us for the Council meeting Friday afternoon, a Town Hall Q&A on Friday evening.

His keynote luncheon highlights Saturday activities along with workshops, an exhibitor expo, and an entertaining dinner party that evening. On Sunday it’s the Convention closing and final recognitions, plus a final farewell before they head to LCI-CON Hong Kong and his installation as Lions International President for 2026-2027.

Looking Forward to May

Before we close out another impactful Lions year here in Arizona, we should remember to begin posting on the Lion Portal our incoming slate of club officers. Also, we have a final two months at recruiting new members and for earning the Lions Club Excellence Award for 2025-2026. Has your club qualified with its donation to our foundation, LCIF?

Service Impact in April
Arizona Lions clubs collectively delivered thousands of volunteer hours this year, addressing critical needs in our communities. From vision screenings and eyeglass recycling to food drives, youth programs, and disaster relief efforts, Lions stepped forward wherever help was needed.

I’m particularly pleased with Lions’ engagement with the “Road to 250” Traveling Museum service project. More than 100 Lions from Prescott to Tombstone, Safford to Bullhead City, Snowflake to Florence, Tucson and Phoenix provided assistance at America250 events at 31 different destinations statewide.

For the nine weeks from February 12 to April 11, the Arizona Centennial Liberty Bell was featured and visited by an estimated 25,000 students and families at such small-town destinations as Chinle, Window Rock, Clifton, Eagar, Patagonia, and Parker. At sites and towns big and small, Lions served as guides, greeters and docents along with local community supporters. It was so much fun sharing, serving and participating.

Leadership and Development
This year saw great strides in leadership development at the club and district levels. Training opportunities, conferences, and mentoring efforts have prepared the next generation of Lion leaders to carry our mission forward with energy and vision.

During the two-wick blitz of online training sessions in April, 114 Lions participated in the two-a-day sessions. At least three position-specific opportunities for each of eight club officer training sessions were available, from President to Lion Tamer. More than 20 clubs were represented – the overwhelming predominance from 21-South. Kudos to Dereck Davis, Linda Finley and Ellen Yopps for helping with the instruction.

New Member LCI Fee Reimbursed
At the Multiple District, we continue to reimburse the LCI $35 registration fee to NEW Lions members. Beginning this second-half of FY2025-2026, 102 new members in 21-North and 110 in 21-South have been reimbursed this fee, with an additional 18 more returning Lions.

This represents 230 total increase in membership through the four months of this campaign. Well done! Two new clubs were chartered in the North, one in the South, plus one club reactivated in the South. The numbers reflect direct payment of initiation fees from the MD accompanied the charter application.

Celebrating Our Legacy
We continue to honor the legacy of service that defines Lions Clubs, while adapting to meet today’s challenges. Whether through innovative service projects or embracing new ways to connect, Arizona Lions remain a vital force for good.

Looking Ahead
As we transition into a new Lions year, we do so with pride in what we’ve accomplished and optimism for what lies ahead. Together, we will continue to serve, grow, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Again, thank you to every Lion in Arizona for your dedication, generosity, and unwavering commitment to service.

We Serve.

Your Servant Leader

Governor’s Report – District 21-N

Dear Lions of District 21 North,

As we welcome the month of May, I am filled with gratitude and pride for each one of you, our dedicated leaders, our seasoned Lions, and our newest members who have chosen to serve alongside us. Your commitment continues to strengthen our mission and expand our impact across the communities we serve.

This past month has been especially meaningful. We came together to celebrate Leo Awareness Month, honor our Environment Week of Service, and welcome new members during World Induction Day
These moments reflect the heart of Lionism, leadership, compassion, and action. To our Leos, thank you for inspiring us with your energy and vision. To our new Lions, welcome to a family rooted in service. And to our experienced Lions, your mentorship and dedication remain the foundation of our success.
As we approach the final stretch of the 2025–2026 Lionistic year, we still have exciting opportunities ahead. I encourage each of you to stay engaged and connected. Don’t miss our upcoming district events, especially our very first Arizona Lions Service Carnival. This is a wonderful chance to serve side by side, share fellowship, and make a visible difference in our communities.
Additionally, I invite you all to register for our State Convention. It will be a time to celebrate our collective achievements, recognize outstanding service, and reflect on the lives we’ve touched together. Your presence will make it even more special.
Let us finish this journey strong with purpose, unity, and pride in all we have accomplished. At the same time, let’s begin building excitement and momentum for the 2026–2027 Lionistic year. The future is bright, and together, there is so much more we can achieve.
Thank you for your unwavering service and for embodying the true spirit of Lionism.
With appreciation and Lion pride

Governor’s Report – District 21-S

21-S Lions Rock!

Congratulations to the Lions of District 21-S! Your visible service, strong leadership, and positive club culture continue to drive growth across Southern Arizona. Because of your dedication, you have served more than 324,000 people this year with over 31,000 volunteer hours, and 54% of our clubs are actively reporting service. That visibility in your communities attracts new Lions, keeps current Lions engaged, and strengthens our clubsresulting in an outstanding 128 net new Lions in District 21-S this year.

Some of your many accomplishments this year include:

MD Leo Chair Pratik Panda and ZC Nikki Perrill assisted our Lions Youth Exchange Program to start sending youth overseas. ZC Nikki also led her club, the Marana Host Lions Club, in sponsoring one student to Europe. Zone Chair Marcelino Varona likewise led the Nogales Lions in sending two Leos from Nogales High School and one graduate from Rio Rico High School to Europe. This exciting opportunity has also sparked discussion about forming a new Leo Club in Rio Rico, which once had a Lions Club. We hope to make our Youth Exchange Program available to all clubs in the future.

Lion Laurie Fivecoat of the Huachuca City Lions Club joined with Zone Chair Jerry Hursh, President of the Benson Lions Club, to launch a new Lions podcast for Arizona. They have already interviewed the current and incoming District Governors of 21-S and are looking for more Arizona Lions to share their stories and highlight the great work happening across our state. Lion Jerry is now President of the Benson Lions Club and has grown the club from just 1 member in January to 11 members today.

Extension Chair PCC Jim McCown and Lion Joy Moore successfully chartered the new Tempe Starlight Lions Club with 20 members by working closely with the Tempe Chamber of Commerce. The club is made up of enthusiastic working professionals who are already actively serving and growing.

Lion Ron Gillet led the formation of the Sun Lakes Robson Reserve Branch with 13 members, and they are already actively recruiting toward becoming a full club. Robson Reserve is a senior living and retirement community for active adults, and there are many similar communities across Arizona that could become strong and active Lions clubs. Lion Ron is happy to share more information with those interested.

District Treasurer Rick Duncan modernized treasury operations by consolidating accounts into one bank, improving financial controls, placing savings funds into an interest-bearing account, and formalizing financial statements. His work has strengthened financial oversight, improved accountability, and made district financial planning much easier and more transparent.

And our VDGE, Ed Lopez, already has his plans in place for the coming year and is working closely with all of you to ensure a smooth transition in July as we continue serving our clubs and the people of Southern Arizona.

The Lions of 21-S are proving every day that service, teamwork, and positive leadership create stronger clubs and stronger communities. Thank you for all you do. Your energy, your commitment, and your heart for service are what make District 21-S so special.

Keep serving. Keep growing. Keep having fun. 21-S Lions truly rock!

Thank you for being a Lion!

Richard Stevenson

Special History Behind Theme Song
“We Serve”

When DG MJ made a Road Trip to 21 North District Zone 4, everyone expected our standard energy and service provided by the incredible Lions from Pinetop, Show Low, Overgaard and Payson…….and great discussions occurred!

These clubs are serving endlessly, making a difference in their communities locally and globally with passion, dedication, and teamwork.

Lion Everett shared how important 1987 was, when women were welcomed into Lions International. He talked about he and his wife attending the next International Convention, so they both could be equal participants! It was there Billy Davis Jr., an American rock and blues guitarist, singer and songwriter and later Rock & Roll of Fame inductee – wrote a song for the Lions International called “We Serve”.  This talented gentleman clearly understood the underlying mission of Lions. Lion Everett was able to get an autographed copy of the sheet music, he performed for all in attendance.

Click here to hear Lion Everett’s rendition of “We Serve” :

https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=959899936616016

It was a beautiful time of connection, laughter, and shared purpose reminding us all that when Lions unite, great things happen!

Billy Davis Jr., above,  is an American Rock and Blues guitarist, singer and songwriter, best known for his work with Hank Ballard & the Midnighters AND founding member of the 5th Dimension. The 5th Dimension is know for hits like “Aquarius and Let the Sunshine In”.  He is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee.

A fantastic evening!  Thank you DG MJ, 1VDG Jim Myers, 2VDG Derrick Davis and we can’t miss “Ms. Speed-Racer” for making the trek up the mountain!

Lions Flag has been to BOTH Poles!

Admiral Richard E. Byrd

Did you know that a Lions Clubs International flag has literally traveled to the ends of the Earth? In May 9, 1926, legendary explorer and Lion Admiral Richard E. Byrd carried the Lions emblem with him on his historic flights over both the North Pole and the South Pole.

That means the Lions symbol isn’t just global — it’s polar. It’s a reminder that our mission of service reaches farther than any other organization on Earth.

From small towns to the farthest corners of the world, Lions have always stood for courage, compassion, and community. Admiral Byrd’s journey proves that when Lions serve, there are truly no limits to where our impact can go.

Lions have reached the ends of the Earth — and we’re still going strong!

Happy Mother’s Day

Club Members & Officers are
Responsible for Cohesion

A Club’s internal effectiveness and cohesion are centered on mutual respect for varied ideas and personalities.  In discussions, we should always remain curious versus assuming some alternative agenda.  Embracing the idea of best intent will help open communications versus creating barriers.

Lions should remember, we are unable to change others only how we choose to respond.  Just as we don’t judge those in our community in need, so should we extend the same gracious to each other.  When conflicts arise, we should not ignore nor allow to fester, but rather, in good faith, work through the conflict respectfully.

Lions should hold fast to our standards and values, leading by example at all times. No one within our Clubs, District or MD should feel unseen, unheard or disrespected.  Unlike in school, we are now adults and should be able to work through difficult discussions with openness, honesty and caring.

LCIF

As a Lion, remember the importance of supporting the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF). Every contribution, big or small, helps power life-changing work around the world. From disaster relief to vision care, fighting hunger, and supporting childhood cancer initiatives, LCIF is at the heart of what we do as Lions.

The Melvin Jones Fellowship represents incredible generosity and service, but you don’t need the title to make an impact. What matters most is believing in the mission and doing your part to support it.

Be proud to stand behind LCIF and the difference it makes, because when we give together, we serve stronger together.

Traits of a GREAT Lions Leader

Completed MD21 Club Officer Training

Club Leadership Training Success!

In April, members of the Global Leadership Team presented eight unique club leader training sessions at least three times over a two-week period.  Sessions were online and more than 114 Lions attended the intense, two-a-day or three-a-day leadership development presentations.  Of note, more than 80 percent of attendees represented clubs in 21-South — congratulations Lion DG Richard Stevenson for getting the word out!  And congratulations to the GLT instructors Dereck Davis, Linda Finley, Ellen Yopps, and Ken Leja.

All eight sessions were recorded and AI summaries created of the learning content — all of which have been posted to the Multiple District website at: https://lionsarizona.org/clubresources.  On this website page, incoming leaders can download the most current E-book for their position, as well as download the position-specific summary for additional information.  All incoming club leaders for 2026-2027 are reminded to take the two Lions Learning Center “club leader path” courses, to qualify for the Club Excellence Award in the new year.

Online club leadership training opportunities in the new year will be posted in the June Canyon State Lion, along with specialty training opportunities for Vice District Governors, Zone and Region Chairs, and for Certified Guiding Lions, plus planned sessions for the upcoming Mid-Year Forum and Leadership Conference slated for November 2026.

Membership Growth is the Key to Success

While we seek NEW Members, let’s ensure we’re not loosing any who are gradually slipping away!  ENGAGE!  Do you have a member of your club unable to attend the meeting?  How are you finding way to show you care and help bridge any challenges they may be experiencing!

Reach Out to Former Lions

ATTENTION CLUBS

How many times have we met someone who says “Oh yes, I used to be a Lions” or perhaps “My father/grandfather was a Lion”.   Opportunities exist!  Let’s ensure we open doors and ensure it is not just a one and done.

Want to bring a few more Lions back into the pride? Start with a simple step — reach out. Contact members who have dropped over the past few years and check in. Ask how they’re doing. Thank them for the service they gave. Ask if the circumstances that led them to step away have changed — and whether they might be open to reconnecting and volunteering again.

Many former Lions didn’t leave because they stopped believing in service. Life changed. Schedules shifted. Clubs went quiet. A simple phone call saying “We miss you” can make a real difference. Reconnection starts with conversation — and conversation starts with you.

Thanks to Doug Harvey for this idea

ALERT – AZ Lions Eyeglass
Recycling Terminal

Su-Lin Trepanitis and Mark Rabinowitz helping get Sue Gill ready for her Phoenix trip.

Sue Gil met with a dozen volunteers from the brand new 21-N West Valley Empowered Voices Lions club.  She shared the following: We spent eight hours sorting, cleaning and reading.  What a great group!  Their President LaToya Lee is such an inspiration to their group and a very motivated leader.  The eyeglass recycling project is new to all of them so we started with the basics.  I had picked up glasses from Tucson with help from Su-Lin and Mark.  I borrowed a sonic washer from our Tucson ALERT location and it proved to be a big boon.  My pickup was nearly full of bags and boxes of glasses, probably 2000 – 3000 pairs.  All of the glasses were sorted Saturday; there are two boxes of single vision that still need to be washed and read; one box of bifocals to wash and read.  Approximately 300 glasses were read and bagged.  LaToya took the reading glasses that were tagged and bagged for distribution to her community.  We will get together again to finish the glasses.  We have not yet processed the sunglasses, so that will be another task for all to learn.  I am hoping we can reserve the Sun Cities Lions Foundation clubhouse on Saturday May 30 for my next trip.  In the meantime, the volunteers will be collecting eyeglasses with their new Lions Eyeglass Collection Boxes provided by ALERT, and sorting and cleaning at home.    I will add their club to our satellite report.

Lions Day with the Arizona Diamondbacks

PIP Joe Preston reported that we had over 107 Lion members, family and friends attend our Lions Day at the Diamondbacks, on April 17th.  The game was back and forth with the Diamondbacks pulling out the win in the last several innings.  The game was followed by an exciting fireworks show.

Because we sold over 100 tickets, the Diamondbacks let us have a display table on the main concourse to promote Lion service and membership. We had over 12 Lions to volunteer to staff the table.  Thank you to everyone who volunteered, and/or stopped by to support us. We had the opportunity to talk to a lot of people.  I don’t think we recruited any new members, but it never hurts to get our Lion’s name out to the public.

Special thanks to the Lions Foundation of Arizona for letting us use their 501c3 status and for purchasing 12 tickets to the game.  That really kicked off our ticket sales.

Special recognition and appreciation also goes to Council Chairperson Ken Leja and Lion Michelle Dalton, for their efforts in designing our promotion flyer and the membership/service trifold brochure.  Both were well received.

Enjoy these highlights!

Arizona Asian Festival at Desert Diamond

A commentator for the Arizona Asian Festival interviewed Lions Marsine & Maribel and shared the following:  “We sit down with leaders from Lions Clubs International to discuss their impactful work in the community. From local vision screenings and hygiene kit distributions to global medical missions, the Lions Club is dedicated to meeting the needs of the people.

In this video, you’ll hear about their commitment to the Phoenix area and details regarding their upcoming Service Carnival on May 16th. Whether it’s through donations or volunteering, discover how you can help make a difference.

This Young Man and his Wife walked up to our Lions booth at the Asian Festival and told us that as a child the only way he was able to obtain glasses was because on The Lions and just wanted to thank us! His Name is Aden Coon, it was a full circle moment for him and heartwarming for us. You never know who has been touched by Lions. We Serve in the community. 24/7 all day everyday!

DGE Marsine met this beautiful soul, Lioness Margaret from Idaho! She saw the vest and asked if Marsine was a Lion or Lioness? Marsine proudly said I’m a Lion! She shared her story about how she began as a Cub, Leo, Lion to Lioness. She recognized Marsine’s vest as they were crossing paths and she just wanted to introduce herself! We talked about Lions in Arizona. She had no idea we existed here but there is a reason why we are placed in certain places for a reason. DGE Marsine reflected “It’s been a good day to serve!”
