It is with great enthusiasm and pride that we share this with the Lions of Arizona. 21A 2nd VDG Richard Hopkins, Lion Kristi Sandvik, and Lion Fred Lugo will be making a presentation at the National School Boards Association national conference March 30 – April 1, 2019 in Philadelphia. 2nd VDG Richard is the senior member of the Buckeye Elementary School District (BESD) Governing Board. Lion Kristi is the superintendent of BESD, while Lion Fred is the director of the BESD Family Resource Center, and all three are members of the Buckeye Lions Club. The presentation is entitled, “If Johnny Can’t See, Johnny Can’t Read,” and details the unique partnership between the Buckeye Lions & BESD.
Buckeye Lions have had their own SPOT machine for several years. It is stored at the BESD Family Resource Center. That way it is always available and charged. All of the local school nurses, as well as BESD principals, have gone through the SPOT training. Once approved, they are able to check out the SPOT and use as needed. This is invaluable for determining if a student needs special ed designation or not, as the first thing required is a vision test. Nurses also use this to determine if a struggling student needs glasses to improve. Prior to this year with the VSP program, nurses that determined a student was in need of glasses and assistance would submit the form to the club for processing. Now, they are able to send the student directly to the eye doctor.
The second portion is the very successful program of screening high school students during registration instead of taking them out of class. The test schools had nothing but praise for this process.
With the help of some Philadelphia Lions, all attendees will receive a vision screening and then screen someone. This is to show them the ease and quickness of the screening process. It is hoped that the attendees, over 5000 school board members and district administrators, will return to their homes ready to join their local club and implement vision screenings in their own districts.
There are related opportunities at this conference currently in the works. Once those are finalized, they will be shared with all.
We are asking every Lion for some assistance. While you are out vision screening students, if you see results that are very out of the ordinary, please take a photo of the screen and email to email@example.com, along with an age and sex of the child, such as Girl 8. We want to use that during the presentation to show them examples of why the students are struggling.
